Shame

By Lee Nelson

Shame

I was exhausted

dragging a robe.

The ex and I

yelled and argued

and powdered

the newborn's ass.

I turned for the boy.

Too long.

He wasn't there.

He wasn't anywhere.

Whole house no boy.

A knock on the door.

He was in the arms

of a neighbor

also in a robe

and boots

a neighbor

seven doors down

I'd never met

but she knew me.

She knew

where my child

belonged.

That was it.

I'll never know

a thing about her.

I can't tell you

if she has

her own children.
