How do I add Grammarly for Microsoft Office to Word and Outlook?

by John Steele

Before you download and install Grammarly for Microsoft Office, make sure your operating system and your version of Microsoft Office are compatible with Grammarly. You can review the system requirements here. If this doesn’t work, here is the link: ( https://support.grammarly.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000091652-Grammarly-for-Microsoft-Office-system-requirements )

Here is what you will see on the system requirements page:
Grammarly for Microsoft Office system requirements

The following system requirements must be met to operate Grammarly for Microsoft Office on your computer:

  • Compatible operating systems: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10.
  • Microsoft® Office: 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, or 2019.

Also, Grammarly for Microsoft Office can be used with an Office 365 subscription as long as your plan provides one of the supported Microsoft® Office versions.

Can I download the Grammarly add-in on my Mac?
At this time, Grammarly does not offer an add-in for MS Word or Pages for macOS users. However, you can go to the Apps section in your Grammarly editor and download a native desktop app for Mac.

Now that you know that your system is compatible, we are ready to download the free Grammarly for Microsoft Office add-on.

You can download the latest FREE version of Grammarly for Microsoft Office at http://www.grammarly.com/office-addin and then follow the instructions on that page to install it.

  1. Click on the red “Free Download” button and you will find that the download does not start, but instead takes you to a login page.
  2. Don’t panic. You need to log in using a Facebook account, a Google account, or by using your email. I choose to use my email account.
  3. After you fill out the login page with your account choice, click on the “Sign Up” button.
  4. The download for Grammarly should have started, but it didn’t for me. Instead, I was taken to yet another screen that looks like this:
  5. I found this page mostly useless except for the fact that the circled word “here” is the real link to start the download.
  6. Now if you still don’t see any download happening, check your download folder for the executable file (*.exe) and double click on that to get things started. The name of the file is ‘GrammarlyAddInSetup.exe’.
  7. Once the download starts, you will see the install screen shown here:
  8. The next screen you see is simply asking if you want Grammar for Word or Outlook or both. The default is both and that is what I went with.
  9. If everything went the way it was supposed to, you should be seeing a ‘Congratulations’ screen.
  10. If you had Word or Outlook open while installing Grammarly it is necessary to close those programs and restart them to see the Grammarly add-on.
  11. Open Word and you should see this. Click on the Open Grammarly to start using it.
  12. If you installed Grammarly to Outlook as well you will see this. Click on the Open Grammarly to start using it. You’ll notice that Grammarly sent you an email telling you about other download options for Mac and Android computers.
